Introducing the Premie HAL 24-Week Preterm Newborn Skills Trainer, a realistic manikin of a 24-week-old preterm baby, which facilitates the training of life-saving procedures. It is designed for the use of medical students, nursing students and all other relevant healthcare professionals, particularly within the obstetrics and gynaecology specialty.
The simulator allows students to gain competence in the following paediatric procedures:
- Bag Mask Ventilation
- Suctioning
- Positive Pressure Ventilation
- Preterm Stabilisation and Active Resuscitation Exercises with realistic chest recoil
- Umbilical Catheterisation (UVC/UAC) Sampling and Infusion
- PICC Line Placement
- Nasogastric / Orogastric Intubation
- Gastric Suction and Feeding
- IV Cannulation
The manikin comes with anatomically accurate structures, e.g., the oral cavity and airway, enabling users to practice stabilisation and resuscitation for preterm infants. On the airways, the epiglottis, glottis, and vocal cords are easily identifiable, and the baby has palpable manual pulses, such as the brachial, femoral, umbilical and fontanelle pulses. The vasculature can be accessed via the hand, scalp, and umbilicus.
In addition to resuscitation exercises, the model is effective at providing respiratory training, with features that simulate a life-like, premature infant. The infant's chest also rises in accordance with the recommended flow rate, peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP).
Overall, the Premie HAL 24-Week Preterm Newborn Skills Trainer is versatile and enhanced with various features that support users to gain confidence in core procedures including resuscitation, intubation, ventilation, and cannulation.
